Leavitt Fails to Clarify Impact of Proposed Regulations
09/23/2008 - Statement by Mary Jane Gallagher
President & CEO
National Family Planning & Reproductive Health Association

Today Senators Hillary Clinton (D-N.Y.) and Patty Murray (D-Wash.) met with Health and Human Services Secretary Michael Leavitt to address the serious threats to health care posed by anti-contraception regulations proposed by the Bush Administration.

Secretary Leavitt had a tremendous opportunity in this meeting to reassure Americans that their access to critical health care, including contraception, would not be compromised by these regulations. Yet once again, the Secretary failed to alleviate Americans' concerns and did not confirm that access to contraception will not be affected.

It is more important than ever that we stop these regulations from going into effect. Congress must act now, before it is too late.
